I never considered myself a fan of Hawaiian music until I left the islands and realized how much I missed it. I don't know a LOT about Hawaiian music, but when I was there I explored a little and came home with CD's by Israel Kamakawwo'ole, Herb Ohta, and the Ka'au Crater Boys I've recently gotten interested in some of the originators of Hawaiian steel guitar playing, like Sol Ho'opi'i and M.K. I also like Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Raiatea Helm, John Keawe, Keola Beamer, Led Kaapana, Herb Ohta Jr., and of course Iz, among others. My neighbor here in south kona has a recording studio (Grass Shack Records) that's produced some great Hawaiian music including Don Kaulia, The Kapakahi Brothers, and Ka'u. However, their second album didn't really strike me as being that great.įor those on the mainland.listen to live radio on 105 fm kine. I really liked Keahiwai's first album, for instance. There are some glimmers of hope now and then. Hmm, maybe I'm just getting old and cranky :) That's why when I want to listen to Hawaiian music on the radio, I'm usually tuned in to 105.1 FM because they play more or the good Hawaiian music from back in the day. It's either a cover of an oldie song, or it sounds just like every other contemporary Hawaiian song out now. Like the people above me, I also prefer the older Hawaiian music artists who had their hits in the 90s and earlier.Īll the recent stuff seems so unoriginal and lacking. Hope to attend a concert while I am there!Īndy, for someone who is new to Hawaii and the island music you really have developed great taste in music! I'm returning to Oahu with my family in August. I have 26 CD's and I listen to them every day. Since then, I have become a Hawaiian music fanatic. I never heard any Hawaiian music until I visited Honolulu last summer. I think Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is number one! My other favorites are Raiatea Helm (she's great), Anelaikalani, Kealihi Reichel, Darlene Ahuna, Palolo (especially Troy Fernandez), Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Robi Kahakalau, Teresa Bright, the Brothers Cazimero, Leilani Rivera Bond, Maunalua, and the Sunday Manoa. I love the sounds of Na Leo, Keali`i Reichel, Keahiwai, The Sunday Manoa, Maunalua, and etc. from Kalapana, C&K, Olomana, Peter Moon etc. I love the sounds of Dennis Pavao, Darlene Ahuna, Makaha Sons, Brothers Cazimero, and Sean Na'auao to name a few.
